President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday called on Nicosia-based ambassadors of Arab states to stand by Cyprus in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Istanbul in April.

“The President welcomed their support in efforts to improve OIC resolutions, especially during the last meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Kuwait last May,” an official announcement said.

“The Republic of Cyprus is looking forward to a similar position of principle in view of the upcoming OIC summit in Istanbul in April,” it added.

In addition, Anastasiades thanked them for their continuous support to a Cyprus settlement based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Cyprus is divided since the summer of 1974 following a Turkish invasion sparked by a short-lived coup in Nicosia.

Stalled UN-brokered talks aiming to reunite the island resumed in May between the President and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci who was elected in April.
