A landmark of the area’s cultural heritage – the only windmill of its kind in Paphos and one of just a few remaining in Cyprus – has been saved from total collapse.

Interim Antiquities Department efforts to prevent the building from falling down were made in the nick of time but are now well within the first phase of work. The works currently being carried out are considered to be temporary, pending the completion of studies on how to conserve the structure in the long-term.

The windmill is situated on a private piece of land in the town centre, behind the municipal gardens.

The Antiquities Department intervened to undertake the windmill’s protection and conservation as the structure is considered to be a representative example of the cultural heritage of Paphos and Cyprus in general.

The department is, according to reports, currently attempting to make the windmill state property with efforts currently concentrated on the purchase of the structure itself and not necessarily the plot of land it is situated on.

The Paphos Municipality had, some years ago, began efforts to take over the land where the windmill is situated to better showcase the structure and also prevent the private owners from developing the plot it in other ways.

However, the financial crisis prevented the municipality from moving ahead.
