The Paphos village of Acheleia could play host to the first private cemetery on the island, according to media reports.

The Paphos Municipality, which has for some years now been planning and working towards the creation of a new regional cemetery, is turning to the private sector to outsource the completion of the study. The construction work and the cemetery’s administration for such a period of time has also been calculated according to the same reports in Phileleftheros.

An article on Monday reveals that following the many problems and delays in the process leading to the commencement of work on the site in Acheleia, the municipality is now looking into the possibility of assigning the work to a private enterprise.

To this end, Paphos authorities are investigating the legal aspects and particular procedural details of the project.

Their main concern is to find the formula by which the private investor administering the site will be made to comply with religious practices and norms, make it impossible for his to financially exploit the believers, and will not come into conflict with church authorities.

Sources claim this is the last chance for the project to move forward, as local and state services have failed to see it through to its completion. Church objections have also been ruled out since the inception of a new cemetery is a matter which is exclusively in the hands of municipal authorities.
