The Larnaca municipal council on Monday rejected a request to allow the operation of a company that provides logistics for oil and gas exploration for another six months.

Thirteen councillors voted against, 12 in favour, and one abstained.

The installations at Larnaca port were going to be used by energy giant Total that plans to undertake exploratory drilling off the island’s coast.

Extension of the company’s operation is opposed by residents who fear that the town’s port would be turned into an industrial hub.
