President Nicos Anastasiades gave an emotional speech at his alma mater on Wednesday, the University of Athens’ Law School, after he was awarded an honorary doctorate.

During the special ceremony at the leading academic institution, Anastasiades gave a speech drawing on his past experiences as a Law School student and the way those formative years had an impact on his character and personality.

Anastasiades shared with his audience the notion that laws alone cannot provide solutions while people are called upon to rely on values in reaching just solutions rather than staying inactive and with no justice.

The President was in Athens after wrapping up a Bulgaria state visit on Tuesday, where a Cypriot business delegation accompanied him on a trip to promote business ties between Cyprus and Bulgaria.

During that visit, Anastasiades attended a luncheon given in his honour by the Hellenic Business Council in Bulgaria, where he was quoted as saying that progress in the peace negotiations motivates him to work harder because there are problems that must be addressed with determination, but also with sensitivity by the two communities.
