Fundraising is continuing for the construction of a park with equipment for disabled children in Larnaca, which the Rotary Club of Larnaca-Kition is undertaking. The park will include swings and a roundabout that wheelchair users can enjoy, amongst other items.
So far, a number of fundraising events – including a charity tennis match, music nights and other events – have raised close to €10,000, but another €20,000 is still needed, with preliminary work on the park starting in the spring.
The Rotary Club is planning a number of additional fundraising events this year, which are still in the planning process, but may include further music nights, a fashion show and various sporting tournaments. The public is requested to support these events for a very worthy cause where they can, whilst corporate donations or sponsorship are also welcome.

Medical equipment
The Friendship Circle volunteer group is requesting any unwanted medical equipment or supplies, which are urgently needed by the sick and disabled people it supports.
The request is for any old, unused or unwanted medical aids that could be gathering dust at home or in the shed, such as crutches, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, blood pressure monitoring devices, hearing aids and any other relevant supplies.
The organisation says: “We are in desperate need of any items that help people to feel better and offer them a better quality of life and we will do all the legwork if anyone has something to donate.
The group can personally collect the items from anywhere and will then distribute them to those in need. Even if you are not sure if something you have can be put to use, give them a call on: 24242770, or email them: office@friendshipcircle.eu, and they will come and have a look.
Cat food
The Helping Cats Larnaca Area group is currently short-staffed and seeking volunteers who can donate half an hour, once a week, to feed the growing colony of cats near the area of Carrefour supermarket. The volunteers need to be able to provide food for the cats as well as their time.
The approximate amount of food to donate on each weekly visit is a kilo of cat biscuits and two small tins of wet food, which can be purchased for around €3 in total, and, depending where the individual lives, the whole process of feeding the strays should only take some minutes.
If you are willing to assist, please contact the group through its Facebook page ‘Helping Cats Larnaca Area’.
UKCA donation for children in need
The Thursday Morning Ladies Craft Group of the UKCA (United Kingdom Citizens Association) raised €1,200 from its Charity Coffee Morning and Xmas Bazaar/Table Top Sale held in November 2015.
The event was in support of children in need and the sum raised from stalls, competitions, activities and a raffle went towards the purchase of items specifically requested by the separate girls’ and boys’ state orphanages in Larnaca.
The boys requested an Xbox games console – which was purchased for the home, along with three games – whilst the teenage girls requested an exercise bike, and also received some light weights and a Wii Fit games console. A Wii balance board (an add-on piece of equipment for exercising through the games) was donated separately to the UKCA for the girls’ home.
Brenda Hewer of the Thursday Morning Ladies Craft Group also visited the homes on Christmas morning and took cakes, chocolates, sweets and biscuits for the children.
