Six in ten people think President Demetris Christofias should resign after the Mari naval base blast, according to a poll published by Simerini on Sunday.

The poll carried out by Prime Consulting sampled 688 men and women across the country over the age of 18 between September 6 and 8 on behalf of the paper. Asked whether Christofias should resign, 44 per cent said ‘definitely yes’, 15 per cent ‘probably yes’, 10 per cent ‘probably not’ and 24 per cent ‘definitely not’. The results showed that 23 per cent of AKEL voters who took part in the survey agree that former AKEL leader Christofias should resign.

Asked about their opinion of the president, 73 per cent of all respondents had a very negative or negative view, while 23 per cent had a positive or very positive view of him. Again, from those respondents who are AKEL voters, three out of ten had a negative or very negative view of their man in office.

When asked whether Christofias’ answers at the Mari inquiry were satisfactory, 59 per cent said definitely not, 15 per cent probably not, 14 per cent definitely yes and eight per cent probably yes.

Asked whether responsibility rests with the president even after he testified at the inquiry, 63 per cent said definitely yes, 16 per cent probably yes, while 11 per cent said definitely no, and six per cent probably no.

Finally, asked whether the inquiry headed by Polys Polyviou was doing its job properly, 17 per cent said definitely yes, 40 per cent probably yes, 12 per cent probably not, and 12 per cent definitely not, while 19 per cent did not know or would not answer.
