Volunteer club Rotaract Club of Larnaca-Kition is going to build the first playground in Larnaca for children with physical disabilities, they announced this week.

Every year in June the club, which is a service club for young men and women of ages 18 to 30, decides on projects for the year.

Last June Rotaract Club of Larnaca-Kition voted to partner with the Rotary Club of Larnaca-Kition and the Interact Club of American Academy Interact for one big project, building the playground which is not meant to be only for the disabled, but for all children.

“We hope that this will bring the physically disabled and other children together,” said president of Rotaract Hannah Mortaga. “That’s why it is in the centre of Larnaca. We made an agreement with the municipality to use the park opposite the PA College. It’s already a park but it needs a lot of work. It hasn’t been used or taken care of, but it’s half way done so it’s low cost.”

In order to raise money, they have been organising events since last year.

“We believe in giving back something, so we don’t go door to door and ask for money but we organise fund raising events,” Mortaga explained.

“First we had a jazz night where a band played for free, than we cooked meals for employees at Thomson Reuters and sold them really cheap, and we cooperated with Ammos Beach bar who paid for a band that came from Greece, and we also had a Spanish movie month.”

The next event – a theatre production at St George Lyceum in Larnaca – is on March 4 So far Rotaract has collected €3,200 and their goal is €4,000. They hope to get the rest from the next event.

The park will open at the end of June though it may not be completely finished by then. In April the first equipment will be bought and the architectural plans finalised.

“We may only buy two or three things, as they are very expensive, but it’s a start,” the club’s president said.
