Paphos Shipwreck to be sunk.

The landmark shipwreck in Chlorakas in Paphos is due to be scuttled to provide a new attraction for divers. The Honduran-flagged Demetrios 11 ran aground on rocks in Chlorakas in stormy seas, on March 23 1998.

The Diving Association, the Paphos regional board of Tourism and Paphos Municipality is all backing the idea. It is hoped that state funding will be approved to scuttle the ship creating an attraction for divers from all over the world. According to the tourist Manager of the Paphos regional board of tourism, Nassos Hadjgeorgiou, along with the Department of Fisheries, the concerned bodies are hoping that an environmental and topographical study will be undertaken. The ship was built at the Sietas yard in Hamburg in 1964. It measures approximately 60 metres in length and weighs more than 900 tonnes. The total cost of the project is estimated to come in at around €300.000.
