Cyprus is looking to further develop medical tourism by promotion of the medical, dental and spa services available, with the initial emphasis being given to the tourists who visit Cyprus every year.

Medical patients tend to seek treatment abroad mainly due to the high cost of health treatment and national health scheme issues in their own country. Approximately ten percent of patients in the EU actively look for hospitals and clinics outside their own country for this reason. Around thirty percent of the worldwide population also require medical treatment whilst on holiday. It is for this reason that The Cyprus Health Service Promotion Board had been created to give special emphasis on medical tourism, with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) and the Cyprus Medical Association (CMA) also being part of this project. The board believe that Cyprus has the quality and variety of medical services to become a medical tourism destination, particularly since its doctors and dentists are trained abroad in the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and the USA. They also believe that by developing medical tourism they will see a return of Cypriot scientists and Doctors who are working abroad. CTO chairman Panos Englezos said "Cyprus is considered an ideal destination for this purpose, it can perfectly combine health treatment with holidays, recuperation and entertainment. The advantage for the medical tourism sector are multiple."

Dr Andreas Demetriou, President of the Cyprus Medical Association (CMA) states that in his opinion the Island has highly qualified doctors, excellent and modern private and public medical centres and an ideal geographical position, with the residents having good knowledge of English.  There is also a well-developed tourism structure and perfect climate conditions and that many treatments can be carried out in Cyprus, including preventative and diagnostic tests, heart surgery, transplants, orthopaedic and plastic surgery, eye laser treatments, dental services, haemodialysis and fertility treatment.
