Cyprus is looking to further develop medical tourism by promoting the medical, dental and spa services available on the island. Medical patients tend to seek treatment abroad mainly due to the high cost of health treatment and national health scheme issues in their own country. As the costs of surgery and dental treatment rise in many countries, more and more people are becoming "medical tourists" and travelling abroad for treatment. Cyprus is a popular medical tourism destination, in particular, offering low-cost dentistry and cosmetic surgery.
The Cyprus Health Service Promotion Board has been created to give special emphasis on medical tourism, with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cyprus Medical Association also taking part in the project. The Cyprus Medical Association believes that the highly qualified doctors and modern medical centres combined with the well-developed tourism structure and agreeable climate will attract medical tourists looking for health treatment with holidays, recuperation and entertainment. A great many treatments can be carried out in Cyprus, including preventative and diagnostic tests, heart surgery, transplants, orthopaedic and plastic surgery, laser eye treatments, dental services, haemodialysis and fertility treatment.
