An 85-year old man, Giorgos Liperos, from Liopetri was killed after colliding with an army vehicle while riding his moped yesterday at around 7am. He was not wearing a helmet.

According to police, he was heading towards Liopetri when he went into a truck driven by a 19-year-old soldier.

This is the first fatal accident in Famagusta this year as opposed to six last year.

The soldier was breathalised and recorded a reading of zero.

On Tuesday night, a 30-year-old tourist was seriously injured in an accident in Protaras, when he was knocked over as he walked along the side of the road.

He was initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital but due to the seriousness of his condition he was then transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital.

According to police, the car that knocked him over was being driven by a 30-year-old woman from Paralimni.
