A problem has erupted in the Futsal community in Cyprus after it emerged that the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) refuses to arbitrate contractual disputes between players and their clubs. The Futsal League in Cyprus plays under the umbrella of the CFA and is a form of five-a-side football. In contrast to the standard football league, the Futsal League is deemed as being and amateur competition despite several clubs hosting quality international players and last years champions Agbu Ararat making through to the last 16 of the European Cup.  An amateur league status effectively means that players are not allowed to have professional contracts although it is widely known and accepted that some clubs lure professional players and pay them every month.

Moldovan international Alexandr Topalo has been a professional player since 2000 having played in Latvia, England and Russian, agree to play for AEL last year but a series of disputes and visa problems prompted the Limassol club to terminate his employment. Topalo has since been demanding over 10,000 Euro in unpaid wages, but AEL is refusing to meet his demands arguing that, apart from the issue of his visa, the player had also become "problematic and disruptive".
