Thirty metres of cables were stolen from two electricity poles in Psematismenos early on Wednesday.

According to Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) spokeswoman Christiana Papadopoulou, the control panel at Vasilikos showed early in the day that there was no power in Psematismenos, on the old Nicosia – Limassol road.

A crew was sent to the scene to repair the damage and realised 30 metres of cable between two poles had been removed.

The damage affected only three houses, Papadopoulou told the Cyprus Mail, and power was restored by 11am, although crews were still working to fully restore the damage.

“The damage is great,” Papadopoulou said. She added that whoever did this, had both specialised knowledge, and gear and they knew how to open the fuse “which is not easy, and dangerous if you don’t know how”.

The perpetrators first removed the fuses from an 11,000 volts’ transformer and took all the copper wiring.

The EAC was alerted by the owner of one of the affected houses.

“We have reported the case to the police,” Papadopoulou said.

Zygi police have already started questioning people dealing in the copper trade.
