The sunny Mediterranean island has enjoyed a sterling month for tourism, with a huge 29 per cent increase in people taking holidays to Cyprus in April.

The Cypriot Government's statistical analysis service said that Cyprus holidays have enjoyed a 43 per cent year-on-year increase in terms of attracting overseas holidaymakers. 199,762 tourists took Cyprus holidays last month, compared to the 139,658 who visited the island for their holidays in April 2010.

The service's report added that this drive in tourism, which represented "the largest monthly rise in several years," stemmed mainly from the UK, Germany and Russia. Attracted by the combination of beautiful beaches, reliably excellent weather, outstanding cuisine and a history of giving visitors a warm welcome, Cyprus has something for every kind of holidaymaker.

The vibrant nightlife of the island will provide enough excitement for the most hardened partygoer. The welcoming beaches and restaurants give the island all the hallmarks of a perfect family holiday and the beautiful secluded areas provide a rich setting for couples to enjoy a romantic getaway.

The last record breaking tourist figures for Cyprus occurred back in 2001, when the island welcomed approximately 2.69 million visitors. Having had such a sterling April this year, Cypriot tourism officials are hoping that 2011 will prove to be another record breaker. Tourism makes up 12 per cent of the economy of Cyprus, making it an integral part of the island's development.
