The thought of parcel delivery by drone would have been unheard of a few years ago, but the Cyprus Postal service has said it is now seriously mulling the idea.

The director of the Cyprus Post recently told state radio the service is looking at the possibilities of some special deliveries in a 20km radius and carrying packages weighing of up to two to three kilos.

However, Andreas Gregoriou said laws and technology have to be reviewed before any such scheme would be put into action.

It is not known which areas are being earmarked for future drone services, but some mountainous districts can be difficult to reach – especially during the winter months.

In January, President Anastasiades became the first – and till now only - recipient a package delivered by a drone during the inauguration of the Cyprus Post Citizen Centre in the capital.

Cyprus is not the only place where package-delivering drones could soon appear. Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, announced in late 2013 a plan to airlift small parcels to customers by drone in select markets, less than 30 minutes after an order is received.

Drone has proved a hit in Cyprus, with a popular Facebook page called ‘Cyprus From The Air’ scoring thousands of hits with drone videos taken over various locations across the island.
