The biggest road cycling race on the island, the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour, will be held for the fifth consecutive year between April 1 and 3 in Paphos, its organisers said on Wednesday.

The race, held under the auspices of the Cyprus Cycling Federation, aims this year to raise funds in support of the Larnaca Anti-Drugs Association (SYKANA).

“This is a very important international event, which puts Cyprus on the world cycling map when it comes to racing,” said Michael Hadjioannou of Bikin Events Cyprus. He added that there is increased interest in this year’s event, more than last year, and that they expect more than 200 participants, “half of whom from abroad”.

“It is with great pleasure that for another year we give our name to this very important event,” said the Marketing director of UNICARS Konstantinos Kokkalos.

Maria Solomou of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) stressed the importance of the bicycle race in promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for cycling.

As the race is designed for the “Cycling for All” category, anyone can take place and so far, the majority of participants are amateur cyclists of all ages.

The race begins and ends in front of the Paphos medieval castle. During the first day, participants will cycle to Kouklia and Kourion, the second day to Dora, while the third day towards Peyia, Kathikas and Akamas.

Each riding day is approximately between 80km to 100km long with an altitude gain of +1500m to +1700m. The total distance is 247,4 km of which 191km, will be timed.
