Three years after Yiannis Karousos was elected mayor, the municipality of Ayia Napa has a surplus of more than €2 million, he announced on Thursday.

“After my election to the office and with the cooperation of all citizens and organisations we have achieved a great deal,” the mayor said. “We have tidied up the municipality of Ayia Napa, obtained the designation ‘urban centre’ and greatly improved our image. We have secured several projects with different innovative ideas, have significantly improved the tourist experience and created new benchmarks.”

Karousos said the surpluses were achieved without raising taxes. In fact, he said, on the contrary taxes had been reduced, as had garbage disposal fees by 26 percent in November.

Revenues, he said, for 2013 were €11,460,014, which had risen in 2015 to €14,433,890. Expenditure in 2013 was €10,657,542 and €11,836,169 in 2015.

Loans contracted by the municipality in 2013 were €6,278,627, an amount that fell to €5,530,983 in 2015.

In 2015 the municipality had a surplus of €2,597,721 while in 2013 the amount was €802,472. The difference largely comes from renting beds and umbrellas, which raised €702,395 three years ago and €2,380,000 in 2015 after the city took over the management.

As for the beaches he said: “There is now uniformity since last year we bought new beds and umbrellas of the same colour. The beaches are clean and easily accessible to the public, as corridors and enough spaces have been created for guests to place their own sun beds, umbrellas or towels.”
