An ancient tomb was discovered during the preparatory work for improvement projects planned in the Tziamouda area in Limassol.

The discovery was made during a preliminary survey for works by the Limassol water supply board.

The Department of Antiquities has been informed and given instructions to stop work and cordon off the area, while investigative excavations will begin, according to the Cyprus News Agency.

It is not the first time that an ancient grave has been found in Limassol’s historic centre and at least two sites of Late Bronze age tombs have been confirmed in the course of major anti-flood works undertaken by the Limassol-Amathounta sewerage board.

Due to the discovery of the ancient tomb, the Limassol water board has informed the public that the scheduled works and ensuing interruption of the water supply will not occur at the moment.

The water stoppage was expected to affect premises in the streets of Ayia Fylaxis, June 16 1943 (formerly Gladstonos), Victor Hugo and Orpheas.
